The City of Chicago, led by Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot, witnessed a 139 percent increase in murders this past July, when compared with the same month last year.
Additionally, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, there were more than 406 reported “shooting incidents” in Chicago in July, which represents a 75 percent increase from the 232 incidents in July of last year. When comparing January to July of this year to the previous year, murders were up 51 percent.
Last month’s 406 shooting incidents resulted in 105 murders, which represents a 139 percent increase from the 44 shooting-related deaths reported in July 2019. Some of the people who were killed were juveniles, including a nine-year-old boy who was shot and killed in the middle of a gang-related shootout on the evening of Friday, July 31.
Apart from the 105 murders, 468 other people received gunshot wounds, including a three-year-old girl who was shot while riding in her family’s car on July 22.
July has been a particularly bloody month, starting out with 79 people shot during the Fourth of July weekend, eleven of whom were minors, and two of those juveniles – a 13-year-old girl and a seven-year-old girl – were killed.
This was followed by the largest mass shooting in the city’s recent memory, when 15 people were shot right outside a funeral home on July 23. (Related: Watch: Rioters use ‘peaceful’ protests as cover for attacks on Chicago police.)
Members of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) have also been injured while performing their duties during the bloody month, such as when three officers were wounded when a man who was taken into custody at Grand Central District police station in the Austin neighborhood opened fire using a gun he failed to divulge to the officers who arrested him. One officer was shot in the shoulder, another in the hip and the third was struck by a bullet on their ballistic vest. The suspect was wounded after officers returned fire and will be charged with attempted murder.
In response to the increase in gun-related violence, the CPD established a new citywide unit that will help them combat it.
“As we continue moving more officers into the districts and closer to our communities, we have also been focused on creating teams that can address violent crime head on within our most vulnerable neighborhoods,” reported CPD Supt. David Brown.
“Our officers will engage directly with residents,” he continued. “We will hear their concerns, and continue to work in partnership with them as part of an all-hands-on-deck effort to curb the violence in our communities.”
So far, CPD officers have been able to confiscate 5,600 illegal firearms, and have made 3,700 gun-related crime arrests – a five percent increase from the same time last year.

When the officers arrive to respond, they ambush and kill them.
When asked about her reaction to the massive increase in gun-related violence in her city, Lightfoot placed the blame squarely on neighboring states that she believes are too “gun-friendly” or do not have the same gun control laws that Chicago has.
“Our gun problem is related to the fact that we have too many illegal guns on our streets, 60 percent of which come from states outside of Illinois,” she said during an interview. “We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons – that is hurting cities like Chicago.”

Lightfoot failed to mention that the violence occurring in her city is happening under the guise of the Blair Holt Assault Weapons Ban, a county-wide ban on certain semiautomatic rifles, pistols, shotguns and other firearms that was first enacted back in 2007. It was hampered by several legal challenges, but its ban was upheld in August 2019 by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals – the ruling of which was reaffirmed when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hold a hearing on the challenge in June of this year.
Lightfoot also failed to mention that all of the states that surround Illinois – Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Indiana and Kentucky – all require background checks for all retail gun sales because it is a federal requirement.
Lastly, the mayor neglected to mention the fact that the federal background check requirement has been reaffirmed in the state of Illinois, which is run by Democrats, thanks to it being necessary for prospective gun owners to acquire their Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card.
Lightfoot has also taken several opportunities to criticize President Donald Trump and the federal government. When the president suggested that he would send in federal law enforcement agents to Chicago to crack down on violent crime, the mayor rejected the idea and said that the federal government can help by passing gun control laws instead.
